With Office 2011 for Mac, you can check spelling and grammar in languages other than English.

Word 2011 for Mac comes with foreign-language dictionaries such as Czech, French, Russian, and you can also change the ‘brand’ of English (UK, US, Australian).

User Interface - The display language for Office for Mac follows the language that your operating system is set to. You can configure this on OS X by going to the Apple menu, choosing System Preferences Language & Region and setting the desired language to be your primary language by dragging it to the top of the Preferred languages list. Windows macOS Web Click or tap where you're going to add text, or select the text that you want to mark as a different language. On the Review tab select Language Set Proofing Language. Select the language you want to use.

The default dictionary determines which language’s proofing tools Word uses for spelling and grammar.

You can change Word’s default language dictionary:

Language packs add additional display, help, and proofing tools to Office. You can install additional language accessory packs after installing Microsoft Office. If a language accessory pack is described as having partial localization, some parts of Office may still display in the language of your copy of Microsoft Office. Search Search Microsoft.com. Cancel 0 Cart 0 items in shopping cart. Select your display language. This will change the display language on this website. If you are running Windows 10 or Windows 7, choose Start, choose All Programs, choose Microsoft Office, choose Microsoft Office 2016 Tools, and then choose Office 2016 Language Preferences. Under Choose Editing Languages, in the language list, choose the language that you want to be available for editing, and then choose Add.

  1. Choose Tools→Language.
  2. The Language dialog opens, and you see a list of languages. Select the new language to use and click the Default button.
  3. A pop-up will appear to change the default language.
  4. Click Yes to change Word’s default spelling and grammar checking language to the language you selected. Click OK to close the Language dialog.

Update: This didn’t stick for some documents that I created and amended with this. Until the latest update, and now they seem to be sticking to the language I selected.

  1. Open any Office for Mac application. For example, Word.

  2. Click the Word menu, or the menu for the Office application you opened, and then select Preferences.

  3. Microsoft word for mac free 2017. Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, click East Asian Languages.

  4. Select Japanese, Simplified Chinese, or Traditional Chinese.

    You'll be prompted to restart the Office application to apply the change.

  5. Open the Office application that you want to use an East Asian language in, and open a worksheet, document, or presentation.

    All of the East Asian language fonts and tools are available for use in the application.
