Using the AutoFormat feature in Microsoft Word, you can create both an Em dash (—) and En dash (–) automatically by typing hyphens. Alternatively, you can insert these special characters using the Insert Symbol menu. You can also copy and paste the dashes from another document, such as a web page, into your Word document.

Insert an Em dash using AutoFormat

If you do the following, AutoFormat will insert an Em dash (—) as you type.

In a Word document:

1. Type a word, with no space after it.
2. Type two hyphens, with no space between or after them.
3. Type another word.
4. Type a space.

For example, typing:

Something--Something(space)

Will automatically format the line as:

Insert an En dash using AutoFormat

If you do the following, AutoFormat will insert an En dash (–) as you type.

In a Word document:

1. Type a word, with a space after it.
2. Type a single hyphen, with a space after it.
3. Type another word.
4. Type a space.

For example, typing:

1993(space)-(space)1995(space)

Automatically format the line to:

1993 – 1995

When you press the spacebar after typing the example text above.

Insert an Em or En dash using shortcut keys

To create an Em dash, use the shortcut key combination Ctrl+Alt+minus.

To create an En dash, use the shortcut key combination Ctrl+minus.

Num Lock must be enabled and you need to use the minus key located on the numeric keypad.

Insert an Em or En dash using the Symbol menu

You can also insert a special dash using the Insert Symbol menu:

1. In a Microsoft Word document, choose Insert in the Menu bar.
2. Choose Symbol.
3. Choose More Symbols.
4. Click the characters you'd like to insert. The Em dash should be on the second row. To insert multiple characters, click them one at a time.
5. When you're finished, click Close to close the special characters window.

If the En dash is not offered in your Symbol menu, you can still use another method to insert it.

In the 'Customize Keyboard' dialog box, press the shortcut key combination you want to use and then look below the text box to see whether it is already assigned to another function. If the character does not have a shortcut key assigned, or if you want to change the existing shortcut, just click the Shortcut Key button.

Insert an Em or En dash using copy and paste

If all else fails, copy and paste the dash from another document, such as this page.

1. Highlight the dash you want to insert:

En dash: –

2. Copy it. (Press Ctrl-C, or ⌘-C on a Mac)
3. In your Word document, place the text cursor where you'd like the dash to go, and paste it. (Press Ctrl-V, or ⌘-V on a Mac)

Remove an Em or En dash

If your Word document has an Em dash or En dash and you want to remove it, do one of the following.

• Highlight the Em dash or En dash using your mouse, then press the Delete key.
• Place the text cursor after the Em dash or En dash, then press the Backspace key.

If you want to replace the Em dash or En dash with a normal hyphen, type the hyphen after removing the Em or En dash.

You may want to quickly add an em dash within your text container—be it a placeholder, text box, shape, or even a table. It's very easy to addan em dash, and there is more than one way to achieve this task, although there may be some differences, and all ways may not work in the versionof PowerPoint you are using. But certainly, using one of these options, you will be able to add an em dash in PowerPoint for Mac.

We will look at four ways to add an em dash in PowerPoint for Mac:

1. Use a keyboard shortcut

Define Em Dash

To add an em dash using a keyboard shortcut, follow these steps:

1. Click in any text container object to place your insertion point, as shown in Figure 1, below.

2. Now hold the Shift and Option (Alt) keys while youpress the hyphen (-)key (see Figure 2, below)

2. Use the Symbol option to bring up Character Viewer

To access the em dash character from the Symbol dialog box, follow these steps:

1. Click in any text container object to place your insertion point, as shown in Figure 1, previously on this page.
2. Now access the Insert tab of theRibbon,and click the Symbol button, as shown in Figure 3, below. Alternatively, press theControl + ⌘ + Spacebar keyboard shortcut.

3. Either option brings up the Character Viewer dialog box, that you can see in Figure 4, below.

4. Drag the Character Viewer diaog box a little so that you can see the controls at the top of the box, as shownin Figure 5, below (compare with Figure 4, above). You then scroll within the dialog box, until you see theTechnical Symbols category. Here you will find the em dash symbol, as you can see again in Figure 5, below.

5. Double-click any character to quickly add it to your insertion point in PowerPoint.

3. Create an AutoCorrect entry

Finally, you can create an AutoCorrect entry that lets you add an em dash quickly, with a shortcut. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Choose ToolsAutoCorrect Options in the menu, as shown in Figure 6, below.

2. This will bring up the AutoCorrect dialog box, as shown in Figure 7, below. Select theAutoCorrect tab, and type in your shortcut in the Replace box, highlighted in redwithin Figure 7. We typed ---, that is three dashes.

3. In the With box, we typed in an em dash. You can use any technique, explained previously on this page to bring theem dash character in this With box, highlighted in blue in Figure 11. Next, clickthe Plus button, highlighted in green.
4. Now click the red close button on the top right of this dialog box.

Now, whenever you type ---, PowerPoint will replace the three dashes with an em dash. In case you don't want three dashes to be replaced withan em dash, press Cmd + Z to undo. Also, do note that any AutoCorrect entry you create willwork in all Microsoft applications, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
