When Microsoft launched a multi-tenant version of Microsoft Exchange Online as part of the Business Productivity Online Standard Suite which was released in November 2008. In June 2011, part of the commercial release of Microsoft Office 365. There have been previous updates such as the update of capabilities in the Exchange Server in 2010, it was developed concurrently as a product for the Exchange Online service as a server.

In the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.0, there was a Microsoft Exchange Client as an email client as part of the bundle. When the services were updated again, this was replaced with Microsoft Outlook in line with Microsoft Office 97, then Exchange Client was removed and replaced with Outlook as the only Exchange client.

The 2019 version that was released in October 2019 can only be used on Windows Server 2019.

In the 2019 update, Microsoft removed unified messaging which means that Skype for Business customers will have to use other solutions for voicemail, such as Azure cloud. The messaging service does still exist in Exchange Online, but there’s a requirement for an Exchange Plan 2 license to be able to access the feature.

The Microsoft Exchange Server makes use of proprietary remote procedure calls (RPCs) protocols which are called MAPI/RPCs. These were designed by Microsoft in order to be used with Microsoft Outlook. Clients that use these features of the Exchange Server include Hiri, Evolution and Microsoft Outlook Thunderbird. All these clients can access the Exchange Server through the Owl Plugin.

Exchange Web Services (EWS) are alternatives to the MAPI/RPCs protocols, and these are documented SOAP-based protocols that were introduced with Exchange Server 2007. The latest version of Microsoft Entourage for Mac and Microsoft Outlook for Mac uses these protocols. These have been in place since the release of Mac OS X Snow Leopard with Mac computers that run OS X.

Email accounts that are hosted on Exchange Server can also be accessed by using POP3 and IMAP4 protocols and clients that use this would be Windows Live Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, and Lotus Notes. However, these protocols have to be enabled on the server. The Exchange Server mailboxes can also be accessed via a web browser or using Outlook Web App (OWA). There’s also Outlook Mobile Access (OMA) which was featured in Exchange Server 2003 release.
